Surefire G2ZX Combatlight

 

I got this Surefire G2ZX Combat light in about a month and a half ago, I use it on a daily basis as part of my EDC, at first I was worried it was going to be too big for my pockets because I was used to an old E2D defender I’ve used since my first deployment in Iraq in 2006…But thats not an issue, fits perfectly, which leads me to why I chose Surefire over a competitor.  Surefire make solid products, but yes sometimes companies who make great products get so proud of them that they price themselves right out of business.  I think this was becoming true for Surefire and they had the due diligence to see it and came out with a new line of awesome polymer bodied lights that also come with increased battery life, more powerful LED lamps with increased lumens over the exact same lights they had a couple of years ago.  So thats enough for my rant, here are the specs and first impressions I have with this light.

The G2ZX Combatlight takes 2 cr123A lithium batteries, has a powerful 320 lumens with a 2.5 hour solid runtime and comes with a rubber ring for using the “Surefire” method when shooting a handgun in low light (which is my preference and found it works VERY well for maintaining a good grip on the light in your non-shooting hand, while also using that hand as support for the handgun.  Momentary pressure switch, with an option to turn the rear section for constant on.  It also comes with a steel lanyard ring and black lanyard.  The lamp head is made from Surefire's quality aluminum, and the rest of the body is very high strength polymer.  Overall length is 5.2 inches, weight is 4.3 OZ.  Very bright!  I shined it across a field and could see the trees pretty clear that were about 150 yards away! (and I have poor eyesight)  This is a great light, I would recommend it for anyone including Military, police, fire & rescue, and the everyday CCW holder. REMEMBER even if you are “just a ccw” holder, its very important to have a light.  Don’t be that boot who gets into a sticky situation where you cannot clearly see or identify your target.. it may mean your life, the life of a loved one or land you in the slammer if you take a bad shot.

Beretta U22 Neos

I was in my local gun shop when I saw this Beretta U22 Neos hanging on the wall. I found it interesting as a possible purchase for my son who was really wanting a pistol. I figured he would think it was cool looking. I decided to buy it for his birthday. The model I chose was the 4.5 inch, it also comes in 6 inch. It has a rail permanently attached to the barrel that has an adjustable rear sight, windage and elevation, and a fixed blade in front. The rail on it is for Weaver style mounts. The controls work well and are mostly convenient. It has an ambidextrous safety which is under my thumb and is kind of awkward to take on/off. There is also a carbine kit for it, you unscrew the barrel and remove the hand grip. Replacing both with a 16” barrel and a stocked grip assembly. The main issue with this kit is poor availability and it is priced the same as the original pistol.

Blackhawk Hellstorm S.O.L.A.G. Gloves

Blackhawk Hellstorm S.O.L.A.G. Gloves ( Special Operations Light Assault Gloves ), as the name implies, these gloves were designed for whatever you can throw at them.  I have put my set through the ringer and they still look and perform as good as the day I got them.  If you read through some of the reviews, you will find that people often complain about the sizing (finger length).  If you are truly interested in picking up a pair of these gloves, do yourself a favor and go to Blackhawks website and check out the sizing chart. I did just that and made sure that I was buying the right size the first time around.  Should you have a thick hand, you can adjust the straps on the wrist and top of the glove to loosen or tighten them up.

To me at least, there never seems to be enough money to support all the wants and needs of my hobby.  So for me, the ability to have a multitasker that can perform on pretty much any piece of hardware I own Is huge.  This light is so versatile, it can be fitted to anything from a compact carry gun to an AR-15. To think of it, pretty much anything that you can slap a Picatinny rail to, you can  add this light.  For my needs, a product that is so versatile, reliable and affordable, can’t be passed up.

Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack Review

Maxpedition’s Fatboy Versipack is a high-quality, heavy-duty EDC shoulder bag. I decided to purchase mine one day when, on my walk from my car to the office, I dropped every single thing I was trying to carry in that day. It has many pockets, pouches and compartments to accommodate an endless variety of items. There is a wide, well padded shoulder strap to keep it from digging into your shoulder when you’re carrying it. It’s main pocket is big enough to carry my Kindle Fire HD tablet and a hybrid IWB holster (for when I’m not wearing it), along with a few other odds and ends. This compartment has a nylon cinch-sack type top that keeps debris out. Behind the main compartment is a large, zippered pocket. This pocket is to store a handgun separate from the other contents of the bag. It has the soft side of hook-and-loop on it for attachment for holsters. Maxpedition sells a universal holster for just this task and another called the SNEAK that allows you to carry a spare mag alongside the pistol. It is large enough to hold a mid-sized handgun, like a Glock 19. In front of the main pocket is a smaller, zippered pouch that is the perfect size to carry a smaller notepad and more miscellaneous items. On one side, there is a magazine holder with a large hook-and-loop flap that has plenty of coverage to adjust to many different size magazines. The other side has a zippered pouch that is a little larger than the magazine pouch, which could probably hold at least 2 double-stack mags. The outside of this pouch has MOLLE webbing to attach even more gear. On the shoulder strap, there is a large buckle that allows you to easily put the pack on or take it off. Just below the buckle is a pouch with a buckled flap that is the perfect size for a large multi-tool with a pen sleeve on either side of this pouch. On the end of the shoulder strap that faces the rear, there is a HK style hook that can be used to hang keys or any other small tools. There are many color options, left and right handed versions and a model that replaces the side magazine pouch with a water bottle holder. The Fatboy Versipack is a very durable pack that I doubt I will ever wear out.

Leatherman Wave Review

The Leatherman Wave is considered a full-size multi-tool, but at 4” overall length when closed, it’s more of a medium tool. It is Leatherman’s most popular tool, and I can see why. I chose it based on the types of tools that it comes with. The pliers are good and they have wire cutters and a hard-wire cutter in the pivot of the pliers. The hard-wire cutters help with cutting thick wire or smaller nails without damaging the finer wire cutters. I would personally prefer replaceable wire cutters, but these are permanent. There is a very good can opener that doubles as a bottle opener. At the base of the can opener, there is a somewhat sharpened “V” that is used for stripping wire. One of the selling points for me was the screwdriver bit holder. The holder uses a full-size bit, but what Leatherman did was shave off the sides to slim down the bit. They will fit into a full ¼” bit driver. The bit supplied is reversible with a Philips on one side and a flat-head on the other. Other bits are available for purchase. The scissors are decent, but could be better if they were slightly longer. There is also a small bit holder that holds a proprietary precision screwdriver. It is perfect for those fine screws on eyeglasses and is reversible for Phillips and flat-head. The last interior tool is a large flat-head driver that can double as a light-duty pry-bar. Another large selling point for me was the accessibility of the knives, saw and file from the outside, while the tool is closed. The knives came from the factory very sharp and I have yet to need to sharpen them. Granted, I don’t use the blades very often, as also carry a pocket knife that I will usually use first. One feature I appreciate is that the Wave has separate straight and serrated blades. I rarely use a serrated blade, so I prefer it being separate.  However with that being said, the serrations are great. They aren’t the sharp/pointy serrations you usually see, but more of a smooth serration that doesn't snag on rope and fabric. There is a very good wood saw that can shred through small branches rather quickly. The wood/metal file is very handy and on the reverse of it is a fine, diamond-coated file. After owning this tool for over a year and a half, I would definitely recommend it to anyone. There are a few accessories I would suggest getting alongside the tool. It comes with a MOLLE pouch(for the black) or a belt pouch(for the silver) that has room for spare bits. You can purchase a 40-piece bit set that contains more Phillips, flat-head, hex and even Torx driver heads. I also recommend the bit extender. It slips into the bit holder and extends your driver 3.25 inches and allows you to use any full-size, ¼” driver bit. One last note is that I just, upon writing this review, found out that there is a hidden (very well hidden) lanyard loop inside one of the handles. I never knew it was there, but it is really easy to deploy if you want it, but out of the way if you don’t.

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mm FFP

I must admit, I'm quickly becoming a "Vortex Fanboy."  It's not difficult, when a company puts something out there that takes the market by storm and genuinely gets the community talking.  I hear the same story whenever I ask the guy behind the counter about them:  "I know quite a few guys who, after looking through a Vortex or trying a buddy's, came in and swapped out their Nightforce glass for one."  Now I'm not much of an optics snob, but my collection of glass has seen some nice upgrades in the last year.  Finding out that as I'm willing to spend more on frivolous bolt-ons that don't really make my groups any tighter, a nicer optic will help in leaps and bounds.

I had a rifle length AR-15 build that used to host an entry level Leupold VX-1 that was 3-9, but I decided to slap in onto my father's trusty 40 year old winchester deer gun instead.  I had wanted this build to be a range/coyote/3-Gun platform, which is asking alot in the optics department.  I looked at Trijicon ACOGs and the new VCOG, but I felt there wasn't enough versatility with those. There are plenty of 1-4x or 1-6x scopes that could fit that bill, but I like giving my eyes all the help they can get.  Additionally, all those have reticles that are so frackin' tiny, I need a new prescription  just to read the hashmarks.  So one day I popped into a Sportsmans Warehouse and the counter jockey put this vortex in my hands.

First Focal Plane (FFP) was the ticket I was looking for.  A scope that dials down to 2.5x for close range cardboard or fur works well, and the 10x power is just enough for 100-300 yard shooting.  Vortex also offers a 2.5-10x44 cheaper flavor, but without a parallax adjustment or illuminated reticle...  all things I felt were standards I needed, as I've grown accustomed to them on another Viper I have on my bolt rifle.   It's also a nice balanced weight at just over 18 oz and the smaller bell gives alittle more flexibilty in the rings department.  I still had a hell of a time finding 30mm rings high enough to make a flattop rail / A2 buttstock work, but I ended up ordering a Burris PEPR and it fit the bill.

Zeroing at the range: Very enjoyable.  Usually zeroing an optic in can be tedious, frustrating, and pricey on the round count. I did a preliminary laser boresighting the night before, but it was just barely on paper at 50 yards.  A couple rounds of adjustment back at the 100 yard bench and it was right where it needed to be.  I shot a few mags at 2.5x at 20 yards, trying to best simulate competition conditions.  Went well, quickly transitioning to 6-10x on the fly is tough because the magnification ring is snug, which isn't a bad thing.  I threw on a quick lever which made it easier (if Vortex included this in the package, I would be extremely pleased as coughing up another $50-60 for a CNC'd two piece ring is tough to swallow.

The scope does comes with an inspection certificate, CR2032 battery, a bikini scope cover, cleaning cloth, CRS zero stop shims, allen wrench, manuals, and a Vortex pin.  The other Viper scope I own with a 50mm objective came with a sun shade.  I really wish this did as well, but no luck! Maybe I'll pick up a killflash scope cap one of these days.

Sig Sauer P227 Nitron .45 ACP

Released at Shot Show 2013, the P227 in .45 ACP is Sig Sauer’s latest edition to their Classic Series of alloy frame pistols. With a reduced circumference one-piece modular grip, the P227 packs a double-stacked magazine of 10+1 rounds of .45ACP (14 round extended magazine offered soon) into a manageable, very ergonomic package. It’s currently available in two full-size models with 4.4 inch barrels: The P227 Nitron, and the P227 SAS Gen 2.  A “Carry” model, which has a slightly shorter 3.9 inch barrel is also available.

I ordered my P227 Nitron with SigLight night sights from the Sig Sauer Pro Shop in Epping, NH in June, and it arrived at my local FFL in late November. The pistol ships with two 10 round magazines, E2 grip removal tool, hard case, owner’s manual, and cable lock. Because I have yet to get my hands on the SAS or Carry version of the P227, this review will be based on my experience with the P227 Nitron.

The P227 shares the same frame dimensions with the P220 and P226 with an overall length of 7.70 inches, height of 5.5 inches and width of 1.5 inches.  This allows it to fit in holsters designed for the P226R and P220R. I tested the P227 in several duty holsters designed for the P226, including the Safariland ALS holster with attached Streamlight TLR-1s without any issue. The P227 also fit into several polymer paddle style holsters designed for the 226R and the 220R, including 5.11 Thumb Drive, Black Hawk CQC and Safariland ALS. I have yet to find a holster that would fit my P226 that would not accept the P227. Magazine pouches are a different story, of course, but I’d rather buy new mag pouches than holsters any day.

The P227 comes standard with Sig’s E2 (Enhanced Ergonomics) single-piece “screwless” grips with a skate-tape like texture. A noticeable addition to the P227 is the single finger groove milled into the front strap of the grip directly below the trigger guard. This adds to the slim feel of the grip and seems to improve the overall handling of the pistol, especially when drawing from a holster. Fine checkering on the remainder of the front strap improves traction with wet or oily hands. The bottom of the grip is slightly extended and beveled to form a magazine well funnel to assist with reloads. The P227 is equipped with a standard M1913 Picatinny Rail for your accessorizing needs.

There is not a substantial difference between the grip size of the P226 and the P227. If you were to simply glance at the E2 grips of the two pistols, it would be tough to tell the difference. In hand, the P227 feels slightly larger, but not uncomfortably so.

The Nitron model is equipped with Sig’s standard Double Action/Single Action (DA/SA). The SAS Gen 2 model sports the DA/SA with a short-reset trigger (SRT), which reduces trigger reset travel by about 50%. An SRT conversion kit is available to install on Nitron models.

Out of the box, I found the 227’s trigger not as smooth as I had expected. Granted, the other Sigs I own have 3000+ rounds, and countless dry fire trigger presses in their history, and I would expect the P227’s trigger to smooth out comparatively after a break-in period.  After about 100 Double-Action dry-fire presses of the trigger, it had smoothed out a bit. Factory rated double action trigger pull is 10 lbs., with 4.4 lbs in single-action.

The P227’s slide is identical to that of the P220. In fact, you can put a P220 slide on the P227 frame. This is particularly good news for those who own P220 long slide models, or who have P220’s with sight/barrel configurations not yet offered for the P227.

The magazines shipped with the P227 are 10 round capacity, and are basically a P250 magazine with a different floor plate. The P227 magazine floor plate insert (the part inside the magazine that attaches to the bottom of the spring, and rests against the floor plate) is slightly extended, and allows only 10 rounds to be inserted into the magazine. Replacing the P227 floor plate insert with a P229 floor plate insert will allow 11 rounds to be loaded into the magazine. I did not experience any malfunctions during testing with this configuration, however I would not recommend it for self-defense or duty carry simply because it is not a factory-approved modification. Sig will be releasing an extended 14-round magazine for the P227 in the near future.

I put about 300 rounds of various factory loaded .45 ACP (FMJ, Frangible, Jacketed Hollow-point, Bonded Hollow-point) through the P227 without any malfunctions. The pistol is nicely balanced and the recoil of the .45 ACP is easily manageable. It had been a while since I fired a Sig with the standard length trigger reset, and it’s tough to go back after firing a Sig with the SRT. After my first day at the range with the P227, I placed an order for the SRT conversion kit.

I don’t have a mechanical rest for accuracy testing, but reports of 1-3 inch groups at 25 yards with various grades of ammunition are out there on the web. Bottom line: The pistol is capable of far better accuracy than the average shooter’s skill level, and is most certainly adequate for self-defense or duty carry.

Overall, if you’re looking for an ergonomic, high capacity .45 ACP, take a look at the P227. It’s sure to be a hit with Sig Sauer fans and .45 ACP shooters alike. With an MSRP of around a grand, it’s not the most affordable double stack .45 out there, but with Sig Sauer, you generally get what you pay for.

Werkz Ltd. - Double Magazine Pouch

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big fan of kydex holsters and mag pouches for concealed carry.  The owner of Werkz Ltd. (Shan) was recently interviewed by Greg during an episode of his Tactical Paradise podcast.  Werkz is a family owned and operated kydex accessory manufacturer with products that range from holsters to mag pouches and similar accessories.

I was able to get my hands on a few of their products but for now I’ll be reviewing their double and single mag pouches.  Theses pouches are made out of high quality kydex with a solid fit and finish.  The pouches are designed to fit specific models of magazines and offer nice snug retention even to fully loaded/weighted magazines.  While many magazines don’t “snap” into place (dependent on magazine build) users do know when they are fully seated in the pouch.  The double pouch is slightly curved to provide a snug fit along your beltline which increases concealability and comfort.  For added versatility, single mag pouches can be added to double mag pouches with provided Chicago Screws, allowing users to carry additional magazines when necessary.

Each pouch is made of two pieces of kydex molded together and secured to each other with rivets and Chicago Screws.  From there the edges are polished to a nice smooth finish that won’t catch any clothing fibers.  Belt loop sizes are available in both 1.5” and 1.75”, although I would bet most users would probably use the 1.5” option.  While the options I tested were all in black, multiple color configurations are available to suit everyone’s needs.  Werkz stands behind their products and offers a lifetime warranty on everything they sell.  If you break it under normal use (what really defines “normal” anyways?) they’ll repair or replace it free of charge.  Obviously these types of warranties are ideal; if a manufacturer doesn’t stand behind their product enough to warranty it for a lifetime, you should seriously reconsider who you are buying it from.  Through my conversations with Shan and personally using Werkz holsters, I can understand why he backs his products with such a strong warranty.

Werkz does have a small quantity of in-stock mag pouches but the large majority seem to be on a small two week backorder.  When compared to competitors of similar caliber, waiting two weeks for such a quality product is a no-brainer.  The cost is extremely reasonable as well.  If you have a custom need that doesn’t seem to be offered on their website, call or email Shan and he’ll find a way to fit your needs.  I ran a custom need by him myself (kydex to MOLLE attachment) and he was able to send me a prototype of something he had tried before.

It is safe to say that every new kydex holster and mag pouch I buy going forward will be from Werkz.  I understand this is a strong statement to make, but try one out and you’ll see why.

G.P.S. Handgunner Backpack

There is a place for everything and everything in its place.   I saw this backpack when I was browsing for gear on the NRA Stores website and fell in love with it from the picture alone.  Now that I have owned this for over a year, I am even more in love with it.  This backpack holds a ton of gear and the pictogram storage pockets are amazing at keeping it all organized and easily accessible.  The main compartment at the bottom opens up and allows you to carry up to 4 handguns, or you can remove the foam cradle and stuff it full of ammo boxes.  Going to the range can be a ton of fun, but carrying all your gear to the range .... not so much.  On top of that, take a minute and think about some of the gear you carry every time you go (guns, hearing protection, glasses, targets, ammo, etc.).  The amount of gear we carry adds up and so does the weight of it all.  On top of that, keeping it all organized can be a bit of a chore.  If you're paying for a lane at a range, you know all too well that time spent looking for your gear is taking away from your trigger time and is ultimately adding up to some serious $ at the end of your practice.

Howard Leight Impact Sport Electronic Earmuffs

I first came across these e-muffs when a hunting buddy was raving about his newly acquired superhuman hearing abilities in the field.  At first his claims seems exaggerative (as they usually are) but upon trying them for myself, I find his recommendation was dead on the money (as he usually is).  Referred to as the "game ear" in our small circle, these electronic earmuffs by Howard Leight (Sperian) are perfect for shooters and hunters.  They work as most electronic earmuffs do at the range, when things go BANG they shut off the amplification, while picking up other sounds like conversations, range commands, etc.  Where the unique wow factor comes in, is when you pop these on in the field.  Duck hunters - there's always that sneaky mallard that you only locate by the sound of wings displacing the cold crisp air, followed shortly by a deafening blast from your comrade's 12 gauge.  With these earmuffs, that duck will sounds like California Condor swooping down on your blind from much further away!  And more importantly, your ears won't be ringing the rest of the day after that trigger time.

My old man puts these on when he's trying to ambush a buck.  After 30+ years of heavy equipment operation, a CH47 Chinook helicopter could sneak up and surprise him. But with these muffs on, nature comes alive around him (you have to adjust, a falling maple leaf can sound like a hoof-step if you let your imagination get the better of you).  It's a real ace for the woods.

Nikon P223 3x32 Scope with BDC Reticle and P-Series Mounts

One of the wonderful things about an AR-15 pattern rifle is the level of customization and variety you can get out of one rifle. To be fair, the shooting sports as a hobby is not a very affordable one.   However there are ways to make each dollar count. My AR has had the standard detachable carry handle and front post, a HI-VIZ front post, a Magpul MBUS rear, a co-witnessed cheap red dot, and now finally this beauty of a three power from Nikon. The value that an AR platform affords can be used to turn a carbine into a medium range precision rifle with the right glass. I currently shoot at a range that has a 200/300 yard section and I have been itching to use it.  However I am a ways away from being able to build a new long range shooter. This piece of glass is helping bridge the gap and reach out just a little further.

Glass is only as good as it can maintain zero and stay on the rifle, so mounts are an absolute necessity. The P-Series mounts are specifically designed for this and other scopes within this product line. I picked up the 1" version to fit my scope, however these are great mounts for other scopes and sights as well. Their two piece design allows for flexibility and mounting position.  In addition, the slide on and screw in method of mounting is rock solid.

The quality of these two products alone are great.  However, together the fit and finish of the final product make this a truly incredible value. Just about $200 for a quality piece of glass mounted and ready to roll is hard to beat.

Fortis REV Free Float Rail System review

Part of the beauty of the AR-15 platform, aka the modern sporting rifle, is just how many aftermarket products are available on the market. In the past few years literally hundreds of manufacturers offering thousands of parts have popped up all over the country; one of which is Fortis Manufacturing. In this article I'll show you my Fortis REV review of the 14’’ free float rail system. At first look, the Fortis REV is one of the sexiest free float rail systems I have ever seen. It’s minimal yet aggressive in appearance and has certainly been eye-catcher from the get go. The twelve and six o’clock positions are standard picatinny rails while three and nine o’clock use the keymod system. This makes the Fortis REV extremely versatile. Additionally, by using the keymod system at three and nine o’clock, the horizontal diameter has been trimmed down tremendously compared to standard quad rails. The supports connecting the rails are machined to look sharp, literally. The design concept is basically this: no unnecessary material, no unnecessary weight. That concept definitely holds true - I am reviewing the 14’’ rail system which weighs in at a mere 11 ounces.

Out of all of the rails I researched, one thing really stands out to me when it comes to the Fortis REV, besides the weight and free float design, and that is the grip capabilities. With the REV’s diameter being slimmer horizontally than it is vertically (similar to some Daniel Defense rails), the six o’clock position of the rail fits right into the palm of my hand. This allows me to have the most commanding grip I’ve ever been able to achieve with any other rail system, free float or not. The rail locks into my hand as if it has been duct taped together.

From a durability perspective, I’ve been extremely impressed with the Fortis REV. The fit and finish are top notch and the rail locks up tight on a standard barrel nut with a little bit of Loctite per manufacturer instructions. I used this rail in a couple of tactical AR training classes over the summer and did not experience any issues.

Other features of the rail are (4) built-in anti-rotation quick detach slots. Additionally, even though the three and nine o’clock positions of the rail are keymod system, the end of each keymod sports a small picatinny rail section for mounting a flashlight or other picatinny accessory at the end of the rail. Below is a side by side photo of the Fortis REV 14'' with a Spike's BAR 12''. Now that I’ve talked this rail up to be the best thing since sliced bread, let’s move onto some concerns. Like others amongst the AR community who have researched this rail, heat seems to be one of the largely discussed topics. If you take a look at this rail when installed, it appears that there would be little protection between the barrel and the hand that is gripping the rail. Personally, I’ve not had any issues, and I do consider myself to be heavy on the trigger, but I did want to mention it as I have heard this concern from other owners. Most of which purchased either a set of shooting gloves, or picked up the Noveske NSR keymod rail covers. I actually have the Noveske NSR keymod rail covers installed on my Fortis REV, but not because of heat issues. My reasoning is much less exciting: I just like the way they look.

Another concern I came across was in regards to locking system failures. The locking system of the rail is made up of (2) pieces that clamp together over a standard AR-15 barrel nut. Once lined up, there are (4) hex bolts to tighten down that will lock the rail down tight to the barrel nut. Fortis also recommends using blue Loctite on these hex bolts. The issues I heard in this regard are that the hex bolts would strip out. After a root cause analysis, it sounded like the issue came from the user using an extreme amount of torque which caused this issue. Bottom line: if the bolts are squeaking, aka screaming, it’s probably tight enough. Fortunately for the user that was impacted, Fortis’ superb customer service took care of him and sent him a new rail without fuss.

In summary, the Fortis REV is everything I had hoped for in a new rail. The size of the rail allows me to take a commanding grip down the muzzle which is great for rapid succession of shots. I don’t know of any other rail on the market that offers the versatility, durability, and ridiculously light weight solution of the Fortis REV. It’s great to see an American company build top notch products like the Fortis REV.

Comp-Tac MTAC 1911 IWB Holster

The Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC is a leather/kydex hybrid inside the waistband (IWB) holster which offers alot to the concealed carry market.  The customization options from Comp-Tac are thorough, and the design of the platform itself allows for swapping out the kydex bodies for other gun models (sold separately) giving the owner the ability to reuse the same leather chassis and carry different firearms.

The holster I received is for the fullsize 1911, and it makes that steel warhorse disappear.  I found that the considerably reduced bulge made rotating and normal movements comfortable, with no pressure reminding me at every turn of the holster.  The only downside I found carrying a 5 inch 1911 inside the waistband is the length running down my leg, which makes riding in a vehicle a hit-or-miss as far as posture and holster position go.  Not bad once you find the sweet spot.

I also tried carrying a commander sized 1911 (4.25 inch barrel instead of 5 inches) and the retention was equal.  If anything the real difference was a faster draw as the muzzle cleared the holster three quarters of a inch quicker.  I'm pretty darned impressed.
