Urban Armor Gear - Folio Scout iPad Air 2 case

IMG_2374.jpg

  UAG Folio

When looking at a means to protect your technological investment, it is a balancing act. One must find their individual balance between; protection, maintaining the functionality of original device, and style. When I received the Folio from Urban Armor Gear, I was highly impressed with how they balanced the three points. The style is masculine bold yet refined, the increased water resistance and drop protection is great, and you can still access all ports and what few buttons an iPad has with ease.

Standing Mode

Indexing grooves for stand functionality.

This case is great and the built in stand utilizes grooves in the screen cover to prop the iPad vs other cases that use a trifold cover or bulkier methods.

The material of the case feels great in the hand, offering no slip durability and a nice cushiony feel.

Gunvault Multivault Standard

IMG_2097.jpg

Overall View of Multivault I have been shooting and owning firearms for over ten years now, yet I have never kept a firearm for home defense. About a year ago, I began thinking I should start to familiarize myself with keeping a firearm prepared for defense. I have no fear of using it because I live in a nice area in a high rise with a doorman (not as posh as it sounds) but plan on moving in the near future and want to start learning and getting comfortable with keeping firearms ready for defense. I've been looking at similar bedside safes for a while, yet the price tag kept me spending money on more guns, ammo, and accessories, instead of something I would hope to never need. While waiting for my background check to clear, I was looking around my LGS and saw they had a sale going on their Gunvault products. At first, I picked up the Minivault and got home, programmed it, and began dry fire practice utilizing drawing from the safe. I'm a big guy, and my mitts just were not working well with the Minivault. I went back to the store and returned it to purchase its bigger brother, the Multivault.

View from my bedside.

Multivault is possibly referencing not only the ability to store multiple handguns, but also a variety of items. The biggest draw was the gaping maw of this thing. The nice wide opening allows easy access to draw your firearm quickly and snag free from a multitude of angles. When this thing opens, it OPENS. The door is spring loaded and retained in the locked position when unlocked, the latch lets go, and that strong spring slams the door open, yet it buffered by rubber pads on the base, as to not mar whatever this is placed on or affixed to. As far as entering your code, this safe utilizes a four button system that allows you to press one or all buttons per entry and use 3-6 entries. Basically, your code could be to press all four buttons 6 times but, that doesn't seem like a wise idea. While you shouldn't enter all 4 buttons 6 times, this allows for a greater variety of entries and a more secure combination.

Interior view; Glock 19 with Streamlight TLR-1s with Streetlight Glock pressure switch and two additional magazines.

I have now begun training with this, and it's a snap to pick up and adapt it to your defensive needs. If my living situation ever deemed it necessary, I would surely pick up another one, or two, of these as needed to adequately cover my home. The underlying thing I find important that sometimes people overlook, is to make sure whatever you are running works for you. Sometimes, price is a factor, but if I hadn't spent the extra 40 bucks for this bigger model, I would have a 20 lb striking implement as my hand was stuck inside.

Aimline Glock Sights

aimline-2 When it comes to practical combat sights, there are many options out there. I found out about these Aimline sights from a friend and got in contact with the guys at KA Tactical. In short order, I had sent off, and got back, my Glock 19 slide and got to testing.

aimline-1I found in my friend's Glock 19 that it is a pistol I shoot instinctively well, so I bought it (not to say he regrets selling it but he wants another one). This is due in part to the ergonomics and natural pointability it affords me. I also fell in love with the ball in the cup sight picture that came with the gun, but was not thrilled with plastic construction, so I was hesitant to make the change, but eager to upgrade. These Aimline sights feature all steel construction, which is a durability and utility upgrade over the stock Glock sights. The sight picture is another thing that drew me to these sights over other sights that feature three dot style sight pictures. The Aimline system works great for me, because the principle of the straight line formed by both the colored lines on the sights and the sight housings themselves create a sight picture that is both easily acquired and equally maintained through continuous fire.

I firmly believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, when it comes to sighting systems across all weapons platforms. The defensive handgun in particular benefits from a simple easy to acquire and consistently maintained sight picture. The value and strength that these Aimline sights provide, are definitely worth checking out. I am so pleased with these that If I dont go with an RMR on my new Glock 41 Gen 4 I know exactly what I will be putting on.

In the included video you can see these in action by me and my friend running some practical shooting drills.

Negrini Dedicated 1911 Handgun Case Review

negrini2 For those unfamiliar with Negrini you should definitely familiarize yourself with them. To me, they bridge the gap between wanting security/strong construction and lightweight/slim construction. If you want something more sturdy than your average thin plastic case with flimsy foam, but don’t want to sacrifice half your trunk to get your pistol to the range, this case by Negrini is a great choice. Although built and marketed as a dedicated 1911 case it can fit, and store securely, most medium to full size pistols. When you add built in locks it makes legally transporting in some states easier it is one of the most versatile single pistol cases I have seen.

N82 Tactical Original Holster Review

IMG_0949.jpg

N8 Squared Original with Glock 19 Although my current geographical situation precludes me from carrying concealed, being a good American consumer, and a lover of all things gun related, I still get holsters every once in a while. Perhaps, it's just in case hell freezes over and NJ becomes a shall issue state, or maybe as a pinch of preparedness. Either way, just like my firearms collection, the handguns that I have holsters for are varied. Outside the waistband holster for the like of my Sig 226 and kydex IWB holster for my Glock 19 and now the N82 Tactical Original for my little J-frame or Glock 19.

N82 Original with SW Airweight

In carry philosophy, there are a few ideals which need to be lived up to in varying degrees. One is the concept of that the best carry handgun is the one you have with you, it is the one that you will have on your person every day no days off. This can be lived up to, depending on where you are located, where you travel, work, etc. Another one is more in the application of the holster. The weapons security is crucial in a defensive scenario. You could need to run, drive, or carry someone, basically anything that would require two hands in the middle of, or after, the shooting. For the very same reason you use a holster in the first place and carry it concealed, you want to carry that defensive tool in as safe and secure a manner as possible. What I am getting at is re-holstering ability. If you pocket carry with no holster, then it’s a moot point, but if you're carrying using a holster, the ability to re-holster that defensive tool could be a deal breaker in your philosophy of use.

To me, these are the two biggest considerations, aside from concealability, to consider when choosing a holster. A concealed carry permit does you no good if you can’t carry safely in all manner of dress or it is not comfortable and you leave it at home. So, to me, the consistency of your carry slightly edges out re-holster ability.

Something else that impresses me is the price. The most powerful impact of the concealed carry movement is that it re-took the right to self defense from the elite and rich and brought it back to the people. The affordable price point on the original design makes a very comfortable, secure carry system available to more people which, in my book, is a good thing. Put a used J-frame in this holster and for less than 300 bucks total you will have a reliable proven gun with great defensive loads in a comfortable, secure holster and, all-in-all, will be a system that can pretty much disappear on most people.

Blade-Tech Revolution AR-15/M4 Double Mag Tek-Lok

BTAR.jpg

BTAR2Everyone owns their firearms and related accessories for their own reasons and to me my firearms and related accessories are an addicting and expensive hobby that possess additional utility that I hope to never need to use. Im talking about defensive applications. I think spending thousands of dollars on plate carriers/chest rigs, 30 magazines, and every tactical doo-dad is not money well spent. Much rather BTARapply that to ammo to train with. Therefore I approach that very distant secondary purpose of defense with a minimalistic outlook on my gear. So instead of a big 6 magazine chest rig with crossdraw holster plastered on it I resort on a basic rig consisting of an Uncle Mikes Instructors Belt, Blackhawk CQC Holster and double mag pouches. I realized that I was neglecting training in or having the ability to carry AR magazines, this caused me to search for a means of doing so. Having experience with some of Blade-Techs other products I didn’t hesitate when I came across this product on Amazon. I enjoy the fact that this product does not take up precious horizontal real estate allowing me to have space for other things. This product is not for everyone but if it appeals to you its fantastic.

Magpul- SGA 870 Stock and MOE 870 Forend Set

m870-3.jpg

  m870-3

After nearly a decade of gun ownership and being involved with the shooting sports the expression of “buy once cry once” is finally starting to sink in. I was contemplating the best way to make my stock 870 express a bit more tactical and in trying to save money picked up a non recoil suppressing Knoxx stock by Blackhawk. I saved almost fifty bucks over the cost of a new Magpul set but what I got in return were poor ergonomics and a sore cheek. Not to say Blackhawk doesn’t make good stuff, the fit of that stock was not for me. I now learned my lesson with the Magpul SGA Stock for 870 and the Magpul MOE forend for 870. These items are rock solid and smart. With an instinctive shooting discipline like shotgunning, ergonomics and user fit are crucial.

m870-1 m870-2

With 2” of adjustment in length of pull and nearly an inch of cheek weld adjustment the applications for this stock system are many. The forend is minimalistic yet robust at the same time. It gives you plenty of purchase and has the abilities to accept MOE rails, however is not cumbersome. I have been a fan of Magpul for a very long time and the more I get into their product line the more I become a fan of their products.

I Love My Glock© SureSpeed Extended Magazine Release

extmag 1 Remedies both issues I took with the stock part. Being CNC machined from aluminum the mush is cut out and feels to have a more distinct operation and surer release of the magazine. The design of this part move the leverage point from the front of the stock magazine release pad to a smooth and tactile bump in the rear part of the pad. This second part helps greatly reduce the need to alter grip to actuate the release.  I absolutely love this part and will surely include it on every Glock I ever own and would recommend every Glock owner try it. Henry Classic Lever Action .22

Henry 1 The Henry Repeater is one of the great American firearms. The original not only had an impact in the civil war but also gave the platform to which Winchester improved upon. Winchester continued on to create some of the best lever actions in the world. It all started with the original Henry design. Granted, that the little .22 plinker being reviewed here is a far cry from the original Henry repeater, it still feels nostalgic in a sense when shooting it. Shooting a lever action is just plain fun, and when you think about the fact that your shooting the firearms equivalent of the great great great grandchild of the it makes it all the much better. There is not much to say about this product besides that fact that it works and fixes one of the only problems I’ve had with my 625 JM from Smith and Wesson. Utilizing moon clips on rimless cartridges in revolvers increase the reliability and ease of use. The standard procedure utilizes metal moonclips, and even with special loading and unloading tools can prove to be a hassle. Don’t get me wrong, these moonclips cannot replace standard metal moonclips for defensive or competitive applications. Sig Sauer 522 SWAT

Sig 522 pic 1

When it comes to Sig Sauer firearms the extra money spent equates to a superior level of build quality and top-level reliability. You can get into a tactical .22 for a little less, but the extra money for a Sig Sauer 522 SWAT is well spent. Where allowed by state laws, you can get the same furniture as this gun’s full size brother. The gun tested was a NJ compliant model since NJ still has an effective ban on rifles that contain certain cosmetic features.  With that being said, the stock is pinned in place, the barrel lacks a muzzle device and the magazine capacity is limited to 15 rounds.  However all that mixed in doesn’t affect the awesomeness of this gun. The ergonomics are top notch with the exception of the safety lever, which although ambidextrous, I found difficult to operate due to stiffness and that it is located too close to the grip. The action was smooth, the trigger responsive and that led to an overall fantastic shooting experience. The factory installed sights are a great start, but thanks to the integral rail, the rear peep sight can be swapped out for a rear BUIS of your choosing which you really should do if you decide to run an optic on this rifle. Bottom line is, if you’re in the market for a tactical .22 and can afford it, buy this gun before someone else does.

A-Zoom Snapcaps

Snap-Caps-2.jpg

Snap Caps main

I don’t know about you, but for me these little guys were one of those items that just kept being pushed to the wayside. These beauties can be had for $16-$18 and I always would look and say, “hmm .. I'd rather buy a box of ammo”.  To me, their value as a training aid never seemed great enough to warrant the expenditure. However after buying my first wheelgun that can utilize a speed-loader, changed this for me.  I wanted the ability to practice reloading with a speed-loader while at home and decided that snap caps would be a great safety measure to take.  My entry into using these with speed-loaders have piqued my interest in utilizing them in regular magazines while training with semi automatic pistols as well.

Smith and Wesson Model 638 Airweight 1.875"

638-1.jpg

 S&W 638 1

Whatever model it may be, the Smith and Wesson J-Frame has been a go to carry option for decades. I’m going to break this one down short and sweet. This is a slick, incredibly well made, and sharp 638-3looking revolver. I could choose to write more but it need not be said. This wheel gun is S&W quality, J-Frame concealability,  and .38 Special +p sensibility all wrapped up into a package that one can either enjoy at the range or carry with confidence.

While I was unable to find it on the Smith and Wesson Website a Guns & Ammo review also lists a 2 ½” barrel option. A crimson trace model is also available. But check out the Smith and Wesson website as there is great variety within the S&W J-Frame line.

I find it difficult to spot negatives in design or construction. Engineering a firearm is a give and take. With this type of firearm you sacrifice comfort of shooting and magazine size for a highly concealable and reliable firearm that borders on pocket gun stature. I can't note these things as negatives as they are simply the nature of the beast.

Taurus PT 1911

Sam PT 1911

This firearm is slightly torn, torn between timeless design, and modern affordable production. On the one hand, you have a pure American classic firearm in the 1911 designed by none other than John Moses Browning and put into service in 1911. On the other Sam PT 1911 pic 2hand you have Taurus, a company that has been successful by offering cheaper alternatives to more expensive designs offered by other companies. Not to say they don’t make quality firearms, but suffice to say they are not always the most independent when it comes to design. As far as inspiration goes, they lead the way with the PT 1911 pistol. Taurus managed to cram a lot of features into a well-fitted and finished firearm that would normally go for twice as much money. A majority of people agrees that the value in this gun is tremendous, however there are some naysayers. You can find video reviews and blooper vids on youtube showing misfeeds and stove pipes. That’s all fine and dandy, but even the highest end 1911’s can sometimes have growing pains.

I took the plunge on this gun and have not regretted it one bit. It has been just as, if not more reliable than guns twice its price point. Granted if you’re a collector, none of this is all too impressive. The beautiful scalloped cocking serrations of an S&W E-Series, or the almost hand shredding checkering of a Springfield Armory TRP may draw you in more. However, for the budget conscious, or the person who simply wants a 1911 to fill that void, this is the gun for them. It sure was for me.

What other aesthetic options or finishes are available?:  I have the non-blued steel variety with black grips and no light rail. To me at least, there never seems to be enough money to support all the wants and needs of my hobby.  So for me, the ability to have a multitasker that can perform on pretty much any piece of hardware I own Is huge.  This light is so versatile, it can be fitted to TLR1s-3anything from a compact carry gun to an AR-15. To think of it, pretty much anything that you can slap a Picatinny rail to, you can  add this light.  For my needs, a product that is so versatile, reliable and affordable, can’t be passed up.

Sig Sauer P226 Enhanced Elite 9MM

Sig 2

There is not much to say when it comes to Sig Sauer firearms. They have a reputation for fit and finish that comes from over a hundred years in the firearms manufacturing business. Regardless of the trim level of my gun, I am reviewing a gun that is part of theSig 3 p226 family of pistols. This pistol design is thirty years old and is still going strong with the new x5 competition models fetching  $2000 plus pricetags. That being said, it is a trusted sidearm for organizations such as the U.S. Secret Service and Navy Seals here in America, as well as police and Special Forces military groups in over two dozen countries world wide.

Nikon P223 3x32 Scope with BDC Reticle and P-Series Mounts

IMG_3067 (1)

One of the wonderful things about an AR-15 pattern rifle is the level of customization and variety you can get out of one rifle. To be fair, the shooting sports as a hobby is not a very affordable one.   However there are ways to make each dollar count. My AR has had the standard detachable carry handle and front post, a HI-VIZ front post, a Magpul MBUS rear, a co-witnessed cheap red dot, and now finally this beauty of a three power from Nikon. The value that an AR platform affords can be used to turn a carbine into a medium range precision rifle with the right glass. I currently shoot at a range that has a 200/300 yard section and I have been itching to use it.  However I am a ways away from being able to build a new long range shooter. This piece of glass is helping bridge the gap and reach out just a little further.nikon 2

Glass is only as good as it can maintain zero and stay on the rifle, so mounts are an absolute necessity. The P-Series mounts are specifically designed for this and other scopes within this product line. I picked up the 1" version to fit my scope, however these are great mounts for other scopes and sights as well. Their two piece design allows for flexibility and mounting position.  In addition, the slide on and screw in method of mounting is rock solid.

The quality of these two products alone are great.  However, together the fit and finish of the final product make this a truly incredible value. Just about $200 for a quality piece of glass mounted and ready to roll is hard to beat.
