A-Zoom Snapcaps

Snap-Caps-2.jpg

Snap Caps main

I don’t know about you, but for me these little guys were one of those items that just kept being pushed to the wayside. These beauties can be had for $16-$18 and I always would look and say, “hmm .. I'd rather buy a box of ammo”.  To me, their value as a training aid never seemed great enough to warrant the expenditure. However after buying my first wheelgun that can utilize a speed-loader, changed this for me.  I wanted the ability to practice reloading with a speed-loader while at home and decided that snap caps would be a great safety measure to take.  My entry into using these with speed-loaders have piqued my interest in utilizing them in regular magazines while training with semi automatic pistols as well.

CC3 Recover Tactical 1911 Grips

recovertac1.jpg

recovertac

After featuring the CC3 1911 Grips back in December '13 in a product spotlight on the podcast, I preordered a pair of grips to try for myself.  They arrived this week (late February) and I installed the black set on my Ruger SR1911c.  The grips only come with screws/nuts for tightening the two halves together at the rail under the dust cover, by the trigger guard. Its a solid mount, no wobble and the gap between the two halves becomes virtually non-existent. As far as looks go, it definitely adds something to the 1911.  Whether that something is good or bad is really personal preference. Prepare for questions and admiration from newer shooters, and scoffs/hisses from veteran 1911 owners. I've heard the word 'Heresy' at least once so far in passing. If you want your 1911 to look and feel more like a XD-M or similar polymer pistol, this is right up your alley.

The main purpose of the CC3 grips is adding the benefit of a rail to affix lights or lasers to a 1911 pistol that is railless, some may say as God or JMB intended.  The designer, Tamir Porat (creator of the Tavor and other Israeli defense products) clearly wanted to add a futuristic look to the timeless war horse. There are reliefs for thumbs on both sides that have very contemporary angles that continue throughout the panels.  This could very well find itself in the next futuristic shooter flick.  With three colors in black, green, and tan, there's a color that will match your pistola's frame and slide.

I'm not a huge fan of how it looks on my commander-sized pistol at the reduced length of barrel, slide, and dust cover make it so the CC3 rail protrudes about 3/8 of an inch further than desired, for the lines in the frame to really line up with the rail.  Of course its still a flush fit inside the channel of the grip.

As for the 'grippiness'of the grip itself, I'm not a huge fan of the texture. It's just raised curved lines that are quite pronouced. Easy for the ejection molding process but cutting edge and comfortable they are not. I foresee a dremel and a woodburning pen in this grip's future.

For the price point, you certainly would be in the market at nice G10 grips or even some exotic wood grips.  I really did just fork out $50 a piece for a plastic design concept of a new product.  Would I have still bought them if I weren't hosting the show/reviewing them for you guys? Probably. Will these stay on my 1911 for awhile? Probably not, I'm not interested in getting a new 1911 holster as I'm enjoying the ones I already have grown accustomed to. They are working with holster manufacturers to get more options out there available in popular rigs.

One of the grip panels for the Dark Earth set was a factory second / had defects, upon emailing CC3 Tactical with a photo they promptly sent out a brand new set, like within hours.  Needless to say their support is very dedicated to customer satisfaction, gotta love that!

  • Easy 3 minute installation. No gunsmith or permanent modifications required.
  • 2 piece, High Quality Polymer will not break or damage your gun

  • Total Weight 80 grams
  • Made in Israel
  • Only 0.25" thick grip panels

What other aesthetic options or finishes are available? Olive Drab, Black, Tan

What others are saying? "Both halves of the grips mate perfectly with one another with no visible gaps. Weighing in at a 80 grams, about the weight of the current generation iPod touch, it looks and feels very well made. The grip itself adds a quarter inch thickness on each side and less than a quarter inch to the front strap. The grooves on the grip are mostly smooth. You can run your entire hand and grip it quickly without scraping your hand. It is very "un-aggressive" unlike the VZ Recon's that would grate cheese. What surprised me the most about the CC3 is how my Surefire X300 fit on the picatinny rail. The light slide on just snug and flush with the front of the "new" trigger guard with no play or wiggle to it."

CMMG .22LR: AR Conversion

CMMG AR22

Earlier this month I received an email ad from MidwayUSA with this product on sale.  I found the carbon steel version with 3 magazines for $156.87 and  the stainless steel model with 3 magazines for $229.00.  I wanted the stainless steel version but decided to save the additional cost and get a few other items I needed in the same order.  Being that I live not too far away from Midway USA, my package arrived in just two days and I eagerly (with my son’s head in front of mine) opened the box to check it out.  I also decided to try out some FrogLube as well, so we proceeded to follow the Froglube guidelines to clean and lubricate the bolt carrier before initial use.  Saturday morning my son and I went out to our range with the AR, the carbine length barrel and gas system and dropped in the conversion bolt. The target was set at 50 yards and the scope was sighted for 100yds in 223.  We were shooting Federal white box and I was able to shoot the entire magazine without any issues.  I was also able to shoot a group approx 2.5 - 3 inches off hand at a fairly rapid pace.  My son has to use a bench (as he can’t hold it up) and was able to shoot similar groups.  I have not done any real accuracy testing, but initial opinion is that it will suit my needs and I will let my son shoot it more without burning the more expensive 223.  Other reviewers state that continued use of 22LR can block up your gas system and that you should fire some 223 through it regularly to blow out the gas tube.  In all, we shot about 200 rounds without any misfires and I am pleased with my purchase.

Tactical Tailor - Fight Light Plate Carrier

DCIM104GOPROThe second I opened up the package I put it on and wore it. Unfortunately I didn’t have any plates in it yet. The next day I went to my buddies house and stole the plates from his vest. Along with some of the gear he had on it so I could give this a good test. Over the next few weeks I’ve thoroughly tested this, even wearing it to the gym and doing five miles on the treadmill. Although it is heavier and warmer than not wearing it, I love this vest. It’s designed to be lighter than their other vests and lighter than most others. The inside of the vest has some nice padding to cushion your chest from the plates and allow some airflow. It has nice pockets for the plates and it comes with removable side plate carriers, when removed there’s still Molle attachments on the cumberbund.DCIM104GOPROIt’s covered in molle and has velcro on the front and back. On the front there’s an admin pouch that’s pretty big. There’s also some pouches on the side plate carrier that my friend said could be for soft armor, I used it for holding my electronics. The front and back are held together by four side release buckles. On the shoulders, they’re wrapped in elastic to cushion and protect the buckles. The ones on the cumberbund are protected by cordura that wraps around it and has molle on the inside(towards the wearer) and outside. It’s extremely quick to put on and secure. The cumberbund is comfortable but its not too adjustable. In the back it is attached with some heavy duty elastic so that it can stretch out but you can’t make it any tighter. They say to order the vest in whatever size your plates are. The communication/hydration routing loops are elastic so they can accommodate just about anything you can feed through it. The drag handle on the back is sewn about every two inches down the back and it runs the whole way down the vest. I had my brother pull me around for a bit to give it a good test and it works. It rode up a little but it wasn’t really uncomfortable and in a situation where I’m being drug I don’t think that I’ll be that worried.

My father purchased me the Horton in 2009 for hunting.  I used it to hunt Elk in WA state and White tale in Central Missouri, Turkeys in Western MO. Signted in at 80 yrds, it’s a great hunting tool.

First hunt: loaded on the hike in, left wing began to fray (made of fiber glass). Manufacturer quickly replaced, haven’t had issues since.

Blackhawk Sportster Deluxe Pistol Range Bag

Blackhawk RangeNot every trip to the range requires you to carry every thing under the sun.  Some times you just need a convenient way to carry around your essentials.  However its not always about convenience, you also need durability and protection.  That was exactly what I was looking for when I had first purchased this range bag.  The 600 denier polyester is extremely durable.  I'm not sure if it's Blackhawk Range bag 2waterproof, but I've never had any issues when it was carried through the rain.  On each outer side of the bag are zippered pockets which contain the removable gun rugs.  The gun rugs are envelope in shape and offer great protection to your firearm.  Also to mention about the outer pockets, the zippers are interlocking so you can lock up your firearms for safer traveling.  The center compartment of the range bag contains 2 Velcro dividers.  Here is where you can get creative and personalize your inner compartment for your hearing/eye protection, ammo, mags, etc..  My only negative to the center compartment is the lack of ability to lock up this section.  Not that this bag leaves my side unattended, but it still would of been nice like the outer pockets.

Kimber Eclipse image

I have had this gun for about 10 years now and its still my gun safe queen!  Recently I have resolved to bring her back out and start using it more often.  After all isn't that why we buy guns...so we can enjoy them right?  As soon as I got this Kimber in hand, I decided to put on an extended magwell and Kimber tactical grips.  But that's it! Those were the only mods that I deemed necessary for this beautiful piece of firearm bliss.

OK ... time to get into the meat of the matter.  I have fired approximately 1,500 rounds through this Eclipse.  To be completely honest with you guys, when I first took it to the range, I had some feeding issues with the first 300 rounds.  However after getting it tall broken in, the gun ran flawlessly for the last 10 years.  If you have never held a Kimber, they are extremely tight tolerances with no loose rattling like most other 1911”s.  Everything is worked by hand to ensure maximum accuracy and it is very accurate! My ol’ man can punch an 1”-1 ½” group with this firearm. The Kimber Eclipse has a crisp 4-5lb aluminum match trigger and when you pull the slide to the rear, its very smooth.  In fact, everything about this gun is crisp and smooth. I do have one major qualm with the Kimber …. the black oxide finish seems to wear off too easy, especially on parts like the safety that get a lot of skin contact.  Other than that, the pistol has a solid steel slide and frame that is very well balanced.  The target 2 model comes with a 5” match steel barrel and meprolight adjustable night sights.  Last but not least, the Kimber Eclipse has 30 LPI checkering on the front grip (I love this feature) and come with two 8 round mags.

I find it difficult to spot negatives in design or construction. Engineering a firearm is a give and take. I can't note these things as negatives as they are simply the nature of the beast.

FourSevens Quark X AA2 Tactical Review

TJG-FourSevens-Quark-Main.jpg

FourSevens Quark

The FourSevens Quark X AA2 Tactical (what a mouthful!) is a great light. I chose this light for its relative compactness, its output, and the common battery it uses. Using the AA battery allows it to be much thinner than many other “EDC” lights. Most 123 battery lights are 1 inch in diameter. The Quark AA2 is only .86 inch in diameter. It is relatively close in dimensions to the classic Mini-Mag light, FourSevens vs MiniMagbut with so many more features. This allows you to carry it clipped to the inside of a pocket with much less noticeable bulk. Plus, I use my light so much, that I am thankful for the use of common, relatively inexpensive batteries. The lengthy name can be decoded for easy identification of the lights function. “Quark” is the actual model name. The “X” denotes that is the brighter version of that particular model. The “AA” is the battery used and the “2” is the number of that battery. The “Tactical” lets you know what the user interface is like. There are two interfaces, “Pro” and “Tactical”.  The Pro cycles through each of the modes by simply soft-pressing the tail cap switch. The Tactical is programmable. It only has two readily available modes, but those two modes can set to whatever you want. The way to switch between them is by either loosening or tightening the bezel. As an example, you can set it up as Loose = Max and Tight = Strobe. For such a compact light running off of AA batteries, it has an amazing output. FourSevens advertises 280 lumens on this X model. The standard(non-X) is advertised at 205 lumens. With my normal use, this light seems to have a pretty good runtime. I usually keep it on High, which is 115 lumens, and I seem to rarely change the batteries. The Tactical has a momentary/constant switch. To use the momentary, you soft press the switch. To make it constant on, you just press the switch all the way in. You can also swap the head and tail cap, which lets you choose if you want the clip to carry it head-up or head-down. I had to send my light back to the factory for repair, because I accidentally got water inside of the tube and the head malfunctioned. This was entirely my fault, and not a faulty seal, but FourSevens fixed it free of charge. My only ding against them would be that I didn’t get any sort of ETA when I returned it. Six weeks doesn’t seem like a terribly long time to wait, but when you have no clue how long it will be, that seems like an eternity.

Remington 1100 20ga. Shotgun

remington1100

Every hunter has one firearm with the most sentimental value. It's probably one of the first they've ever had, and is reliable without question.  For me, this would be my Remington Model 1100 in 20 gauge.  Given to me many years ago by a close family friend and role model in all things outdoorsman, this is the shotgun with which I've learned to hunt upland game birds and shoot skeet.  Over a whole decade later it's still my favorite shotgun for the range or in the field.

I'm not an extraordinary shot or anything, but I can claim with this firearm I can get double and even triple consecutive hits on clay pigeons and quail. The lightweight and soft recoil of 20 gauge plus the gas operated recoil system make this shotgun a dream.

The blued image has held up over the past 10+ years flawlessly, and the engraving on the receiver and bolt add to the classy aesthetic of the shotgun.  This will be one of the finest heirlooms I pass on to my future kin.

Concealment Solutions Black Mamba CE Review

TJG-Black-Mamba-Main.jpg

TJG Black Mamba Main

Concealment Solutions is a small company located in Provo, Utah run by an excellent guy named Jason Christensen. The Black Mamba CE is a hybrid Kydex/leather, inside-the-waistband holster. There are two models of the Black Mamba, the original and CE. The CE offers the “combat” cut leather that keeps you from grabbing the holster at the same time as the gun, which is a great TJG Black Mamba Sight Groovefeature at only a $5 increase. There are tons of models available, but if you are local to the Provo area Jason will take the time to custom fit any gun he doesn’t have a mold for. I purchased my Black Mamba for the Glock 26 I was carrying at the time. When I put it on, I immediately knew it was the perfect holster for me. I had previously been carrying in an all Kydex IWB holster that held the pistol straight up and entirely too high with no adjustments, which made even the subcompact Glock difficult to conceal, sometimes. Once I got my Mamba adjusted, I realized I could conceal even a full-size pistol. So much so, that I traded my TJG Black Mamba Clipsubcompact Glock 26 for a compact Glock 19. One of the great features of this holster is the incredible range of adjustability. On either side of the Kydex shell, in the leather, there are two tuckable clips mounted. Each clip has the option of being moved up or down by unscrewing the hardware and moving it to a different hole. This allows you to change the depth of the pistol in your waistband and, also, the cant of the grip, allowing you to carry it just the way you want it. The Kydex shell has a molded-in sight channel that is plenty large for any different sights you want to put on your pistol. There is a flare at the top that helps you guide the pistol back in. There is also a flare at the bottom, where the rail is, that I can only assume is to reduce the risk of the rail catching on the Kydex on the way out. Jason provides excellent customer service and answers emails very promptly. I would(and do) recommend the Black Mamba to anyone and everyone that needs a great concealment holster.

Parallax Tactical FFSSR Rail

In building a new range/competitive AR15 from extra parts I was ready to upgrade to an extended length forend, to give the 18" platform an SPR type look.  The Parallax Tactical FFSSR rail caught my eye for its slim profile and rails only where they are needed.  I was lucky enough to catch the 15" handguards as soon as they were instock again (they sold out within 48 hrs)  Shipping was quick from Parallax in San Diego and their customer service is pretty decent.

What others are saying? "Unlike many of the slick sided tubular hand guards on the market, the Parallax Tactical Rail is very overbuilt. + Robust and well constructed for a slim handguard.  Definately durable + Sling swivel points built into front and rear on both sides + Install was pretty easy, fit and finish is very good (black anodized version) - Top 1913 rail is not T-marked. - Barrel Nut is proprietary and version I received had odd flats, had to bribe smith to modify a wrench to index it correctly. - Demand is extremely high, need to increase production size.

What others are saying? "I think the StrikeFire is a good deal for the price. It never lost zero, was easy to mount and sight in, and the dot never flickered or lost brightness. Do I want my son to use it in Afghanistan? No, that's why the 82nd gave him an M68 CCO. But for the average recreational shooter it's fine. I have enough confidence in it to leave it on our home defense shotgun.  The 2X doubler didn't impress me much, although I can see it's value for some purchasers. I'd rather see Vortex dump the doubler and put the money into better glass. " - AR15.com review - user firedog55

Comp-Tac Single Magazine Pouch Review

Comp-Tac Mag Pouch 1

The Comp-Tac Single Magazine Pouch is a sturdy, well made magazine carrier. It is made of a single piece of thick Kydex and has a heavy-duty belt clip. The belt clip is specific to the size of your belt, so you will choose 1.25”, 1.5” and 1.75” depending on the size of Com-Tac Mag pouch on beltbelt you carry with. The mag carrier has adjustable retention by a screw that you tighten with stiff rubber between the two sides of the Kydex and adjusts using a supplied Allen key. You can also choose to purchase your carrier for left-handed or right-handed and bullets-forward or bullets backwards carry. The mag pouch carries the magazine very close to your body, so it does not print by protruding outward. One thing that bothers me about it, is that it carries the mag incredibly high. This could be an advantage for competition, but in carry, I find it tends to print at the baseplate. Other than that, this is a great carrier.

Spyderco Persistence Review

Spyderco pic 1

The Spyderco Persistence is the second smallest knife in Spyderco’s budget folder line.  It’s got a blade length of 2.75” blade and an overall length of 6.8” while open.  It has a 4-way clip that can be positioned for left or right-handed carry and tip-up or tip-down carry.  The blade has a very large hole positioned just right for quick opening. The G-10 grips and skeletonized liner keeps the knife relatively light.  The blade was very sharp out of the box and seemed to keep a good edge for a while. The width of the Spyderco knife helps fill your hand very nicely and is easy to control. The knife locks with a liner-lock that is easily released with the thumb of your hand and (with care) allows you to close it one-handed. This is a great, inexpensive knife that I would recommend to anyone.

ATAC A1

ATAC A1

I was in the market for not just an EDC (every day carry) flashlight, but something that would also come in handy during a night time home invasion.  You see, I'm not into weapon mounted lights on my home defense handgun.  I know there are a lot of great arguments out there to have one on your gun, but I don't want to point the muzzle of my weapon at something/someone that I don't intend to shoot.  With a weapon mounted light, that is a scenario that does happen.

After reading a lot of reviews and doing some homework of my own, I decided to purchase the 5.11 Tactical ATAC A1 flashlight.  5.11 took the time to design this light with feedback from law enforcement officers and tactical operators to bring to the market a product of reliability, durability and utility.  The ATAC A1 uses a smart Cree LED bulb to throw 103 lumens on high/strobe up to 50 minutes or 28 hours on low (11 lumens) from 1 AA battery.  The tail cap switch of the flashlight allows you to move from high, low or strobe with no auditory sound.  In addition, the ATAC A1 also allows you to do a momentary on for a quick blast of light.

Last but not least, I truly am a fan of the pocket clip attached to this flashlight.  I know that sounds weird, but I hate when I'm trying to pull my pocket knife out and the clip gets stuck on my pants.  The pocket clip on this flashlight is smooth and has not yet gotten caught on any of my pants. Taurus PT 1911

Sam PT 1911

This firearm is slightly torn, torn between timeless design, and modern affordable production. On the one hand, you have a pure American classic firearm in the 1911 designed by none other than John Moses Browning and put into service in 1911. On the other Sam PT 1911 pic 2hand you have Taurus, a company that has been successful by offering cheaper alternatives to more expensive designs offered by other companies. Not to say they don’t make quality firearms, but suffice to say they are not always the most independent when it comes to design. As far as inspiration goes, they lead the way with the PT 1911 pistol. Taurus managed to cram a lot of features into a well-fitted and finished firearm that would normally go for twice as much money. A majority of people agrees that the value in this gun is tremendous, however there are some naysayers. You can find video reviews and blooper vids on youtube showing misfeeds and stove pipes. That’s all fine and dandy, but even the highest end 1911’s can sometimes have growing pains.

I took the plunge on this gun and have not regretted it one bit. It has been just as, if not more reliable than guns twice its price point. Granted if you’re a collector, none of this is all too impressive. The beautiful scalloped cocking serrations of an S&W E-Series, or the almost hand shredding checkering of a Springfield Armory TRP may draw you in more. However, for the budget conscious, or the person who simply wants a 1911 to fill that void, this is the gun for them. It sure was for me.

930

Tactical Shotguns of yester year.  It's good to see the ol' 12 gauge staying strong, and as the popularity with module, fancy rifles has grown, the shotgun world has been becoming a little... blacker.  Rails, High Capacity clip-o-zines, flesh-eating muzzle devices... no this isn't one of those shotguns.  The Mossberg 930 is pretty conventional by todays high-speed-low-drag, 'gotta have 1913 rail all over the place' standards.  And thank the Lord for that, because this gun is really meant to be put to work.  Law Enforcement, Military, and recreational competition is where the 930 shines due to its durability and reliability.

Jerry-Miculek1It's actually a 3-Gunner fan favorite, with more than a few famous shooters (ahem - Jerry Miculek, Lena Miculek, Ryan Flannigan) having signature models.  Seriously, check out Jerry's 930 with the huge magazine tube and gnarly muzzle compensator, what a beast!  Buying a 3-Gun platform in 930 isn't painless though, as availability is real tough, but for the price it still comes way lower than a Benelli.  Luckily it's Mossberg, and that means aftermarket availability is out there.  Not as much as the 500 but its still out there.  Finding a 22"-24" is the hardest part, since these come with an 18" and everyone's looking for a longer barrel so they can get a longer mag tube as well.  I'm still searching.  But in-between matches, its a great range beast, and will definitely fit a home defense role.

The only real issue that floats around out in the community is the anemic ejection of low-brass and inexpensive shells right out of the box.  Some claim they never had the issue, other's swear by it.  I did have a few shells get caught in the action at first.  But I managed to find some winchester bulk that was a bit bolder at 1200fps, and still mixed in some 3" old game loads for about 2-300 rounds.  It shoots the cheap stuff just fine now.
